CURRICULUM VITAE

Marieke van der Meer (1987) graduated as Master of Science in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Leiden. Besides that she studied parttime at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague. Since her graduation in 2011, she worked full time as a sculptor all over the world. In her autonomous work she mostly chooses materials like concrete, clay, wax, metal and bronze.The thematic of her works are mainly about making the inner world of humankind visible, in all its sensitivity. This all takes place in her big studio in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, at the Maas.

By participating at the highest level of international sand sculpture exhibitions, Marieke developed her sculpting skills in a rapid pace. Only in sand it is possible to make such an amount of sculpture per year on great scale. Besides this work on commission, she has always worked in her studio on her autonomous work. Recent years this has become more and more. Inspired by Czech sculptures, Giger and filmmaker Guillermo del Torro, Marieke developed her own recognizable style. By studying anatomy for years, with Russian teachers, she gathered the freedom to play with this anatomy. Streched pelvics, deformed ribcases.. Hybrid creatures appear, bodies soften, harden, seem familiar, but repel at the same time.
